Wave Race 64 was first shown by Nintendo at the Shoshinkai 1995. In this event, the game had a completely different concept of futuristic transformable motor boats on the water, which was very different from the first game in the series, Wave Race for the Game Boy. Later, at E3 1996, the game had been changed for the usual human players with jet skis.
