The game is set at the infamous cabin from the Evil Dead film. The player controls Ash, and must close cabin windows to prevent monsters from entering, while also killing monsters that are already in the cabin. As the player defeats monsters with various weapons (shovels, shotguns, and axes), Ash's energy level decreases. Ash must continuously pick up new weapons in order to increase his energy. Once he has defeated all the monsters, Ash must obtain The Book of the Dead and destroy it in order to defeat the evil.
The game loosely follows the plot of the 1981 film The Evil Dead. You play as Ash Williams as he fights for his life against hoards of Deadites in both the Cabin itself and the woods surrounding it. Over the course of 30 levels, Ash can use the Chainsaw, Boomstick, and an axe to fight through the Deadites and save his friends.
Fully "armed" with his chainsaw, trusty boomstick, and trademark quips, Ash must once again save Dearborn from the unspeakable horrors spawned from The Book of the Dead. After a vortex to the undead is unwittingly opened, deadites swarm through Dearborn, turning humans into zombies. Now, with Dearborn in chaos and citizens begging for help, Ash must hack and slash his way through the streets and figure out how to close the vortex. Ash soon learns that all is not what it seems--those he trusts may be plotting against him, and the history of Dearborn might be irrevocably changed.
