Wheel of Fortune: Family Edition is one of a series of NES games based on the famous TV game show. The goal is to solve a word puzzle by guessing letters. The players take turns spinning a wheel that has designated money amounts in most spaces, but can also bankrupt the player in the wheel lands on the wrong space. A player can guess a letter and if that letter is in the puzzle, those spaces are flipped to reveal the letter and the player earns the cash amount specified by the wheel spin, multiplied by the number of occurrences of the letter. Only English consonants can be guessed-- the 5 English vowels can be purchased using a player's earnings.

The Sega Mega-CD version of Wheel of Fortune was handled by rightsholders Sony themselves through Sony Imagesoft and Absolute Entertainment rather than through GameTek, in a similar fashion to their other game show Mega-CD game, Jeopardy!. As with Jeopardy!, this game is a flashier production, featuring animated videos, animated sprites, and voice samples of Vanna White (sans Pat Sajak again) and the model contestants and a full spinning Wheel, but also cuts back in other places (most noticeably, Vanna isn't animated as turning letters at all; she merely walks by and the letters turn themselves).

If the wheel lands on any given amount, say $1000, and if you guess the correct consonant in any given puzzle in rounds 1-3, you win the $1000. Furthermore, if there is more than one consonant in the puzzle, your $1000 will be multiplied (e.g. four R's in a puzzle awards you with $4000). Each vowel you buy will cost you $250, however, you will not lose more than $250 even if there is more than one single vowel in a puzzle (e.g. if there are three A's in a puzzle you will not lose $750). But you will still lose $250 if you guess a vowel incorrectly. If the wheel lands on "Bankrupt" you will lose all your money (however, the money you carried over from round 1 will not be lost). If the wheel lands on "Lose a Turn," the turn goes to the other contestant. If the wheel lands on "Free Spin," you can spin again. This option is one way to keep you in the lead.
