KOEI beckons PS2 strategy gamers to return to second-century China with this eighth full release in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series. Following the style of the series, this edition is set amongst the confusion and chaos at the end of the Han dynasty. As in earlier games, the ultimate goal is to reunite the sundered nation, and players can take the roles of diverse characters as they work to do so. Strategy gamers can take control of up to eight different characters in a single game. Over 700 characters are available, 100 of which are customizable originals. Other new features include the chance for more than four forces to meet on the same battlefield and the ability to set the game's starting point to any time during the 50-year period between the Yellow Turban Rebellion in 184 A.D. and the death of Zhuge Liang in 234 A.D. Summon Night 5 is a tactical role-playing game in the Summon Night series of games. The game involves the player moving characters in a turn based fashion across a large grid from an adjustable isometric perspective. At the beginning of the game, the player can chose to play as either a male or female protagonist, and chose from 4 separate "Cross" (partner) characters. Which combinations are selected affect both the dialogue and story progression, leading to eight separate paths to take through the game. The world of Summon Night changed dramatically for this entry. Now the medieval setting changed completely to a more contemporary world mixed with many of the other cultures and tribes already present in other Summon Night games. The stage for this title is the city of Savorle, a model city in this new era where people from all the different world can coexist.

Unlike most other, action-oriented Armored Core titles, this installment is a strategy game. The player has no direct control of the mech in the action but can customize the mech as always, implementing additionally an AI that will fight on its own. The role of the player is to customize the mech and train the AI on training arenas. The two versions of the game allow for data transfer via USB, letting players exchange mech data between the PSP and PS2.
