With Heavy Gear III, the franchise is returning to its single-player roots while exploring a new direction within an open world setting. The game will feature a sandbox map that brings the Badlands of Terra Nova, a key region within the Heavy Gear universe, to life. Here players can freely explore unique settlements and landmarks, engage in action packed fights, collect weapons, purchase equipment, train in skills, recruit followers and customize their own Gears [mechs] to suit their playstyle.
Heavy Gear III tells a new story set during the Interpolar War, before the Black Talons were ever formed. In terms of continuity it’s closer to Heavy Gear I and Storyline Book 2. The story of the game will fill in some of the gaps that were left due to the sudden transition from the Interpolar War to an interstellar plotline.

As the leader of the special ops group Dark Talons, lead your squad mates on a series of dangerous missions as you discover the NEC plot against your homeland, Terra Nova. Operate behind enemy lines as you gather data, attack enemy camps, capture enemy leaders, take over space stations, and more. Combat happens on land, underground (huge caverns), and even in space. There are plenty of weapons to outfit your gear, even some hand-to-hand weapons. You can also add perks and flaws to further customize your gear. Stealth is a major concern in some missions. The game play feel is very different from the Mechwarrior series. Set in Dream Pod 9's Heavy Gear universe (it actually rivals the Battletech universe in complexity, though not nearly as famous), this game requires 3D accelerator with its "Dark" 3D engine. The gears are capable of very human-like movements, such as kneeling, crawling, and jumping.

In a distant future on a planet called Terra Nova an epic war is waged between the AST and the ECEF. You are a "gear" pilot for one of these sides as you join the battle for supremacy. You pilot the various Heavy Gears (large Biped fighting robots) in a variety of mission either playing through the storyline for both factions or participating in the endless dynamic war going on between the two. As you get promoted you gain access to better gears and more destructive weaponry to accomplish your goals.
