After the success of the simulation titles Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain® and Battlehawks 1942 in the late 80s, LucasArts decided to follow up those games with another World War II simulation title: Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. Released in August 1991, the game followed the campaign by the US 8th Air Force to cripple the German Luftwaffe during the final years of World War II. Players could fly in either American or German warplanes. The game was remarkable because many of the playable airplanes were still under development during the war. In other words, the planes were never used extensively in battle, so players could explore “what if ” possibilities with the game. Those possibilities were further expanded by four Tour of Duty expansion packs. The planes in those expansions included the P-38 Lighting, a twin-engine escort fighter and the German Do335, an interceptor aircraft that featured a conventional tractor propeller in the nose as well as a pusher propeller behind the tail of the aircraft.

1942: The Pacific Air War is a flight simulation set in World War II, more specific the Pacific War between Japan and the United States. The focus is on the realistic simulation of the ten aircraft, this means for instance that there is no indicator for ammo. The game features several missions which can be either played independently from each other or in two campaigns for the United States or Japan. The goals are mostly to liberate an area, to defend an area or to destroy a specific target.

DogFighter is a fast paced, arcade aerial combat game with arena style gameplay values. Players can compete against up to 15 opponents in 4 multiplayer modes, or go solo in 7 single player game modes, using beefed up biplanes sporting over 20 different offensive and defensive weapons... With environments built to both slay and save you, the environments in DogFighter offer the player a more interactive experience than is usual for the genre. Eagle Dynamics' Digital Combat Simulator series focuses this time on a WWII-era aircraft, the P-51D Mustang, which operated as a fighter, long-range bomber escort, and attack aircraft.

Wings of War is a Flight Simulator developed by Silver Wish Games and published by Gathering of Developers. The game was a standard wartime flight simulator with the underused setting of World War I. Players assume the role of a Royal Air Force pilot fighting the Luftstreitkräfte in several missions. Despite its setting, the game still features an arcade style to it: the planes never stalled and the planes could be equipped with air-to-air rockets.
