The Game Gear version of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie is a competitive fighting game exactly like the original "Game Gear" game based on the TV series, with the same gameplay format and game modes. One change that has been made from the previous is the addition of a thunderbolt-shaped power indicator next to the life gauge that gradually fills up during the course of battle until it begins to flash; during such instances, the player can perform a super move in addition to the standard special moves. The Game Gear version's soundtrack is made up of mostly midi versions of music from the series and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The Album: A Rock Adventure.

A combination of 2D sprite-base action game and a 3D polygonal versus fighting game. The main gameplay has you controlling a giant Gundam-like robot, crashing every enemy unit in your path. After beating a stage boss character, the game switches into a 3D one-on-one fighter game. This mix of styles really sets it apart as a unique game.

Although the game playtested well and appeared financially viable, the publisher hesitated to release the game. A port for the Super Nintendo was in production but canceled. The game received its console debut when it was emulated in the 2015 Rare Replay, a compilation of games from Rare's history for the Xbox One.
