Captain John Alex, takes the experimental Raven II tank to investigate the distress call... Nova 9 is the sequel to Dynamix's Stellar 7, a futuristic "tank" shooter, and features similar gameplay. Played from a first person perspective in the cockpit of your tank, the goal is to destroy all of the various enemies found on nine planets. John Alex's tank, the Raven II, is equipped with various weaponry and a long range scanner to help in the mission. It is also equipped with a cloaking device for emergencies. Additional power-ups such as pickup energy and enhancement modules can be either beamed in or "salvaged" from the enemy wreckage.

And so begins the premise of Silpheed: The Lost Planet, a co-development shooting project between Game Arts and Treasure that remakes the early '90s PC shooter of the same name. Features include a large variety of enemy types, multiple weapon upgrades, and polygonal graphics. As an added bonus, Working Designs has removed the slowdown and added analog control for the American version of the game.
A ground-based shoot-em-up by design, the game employs the use of jumping, banking, and strafing as you move forward through 3D tube-like levels. The game is seem from a third-person perspective behind the ship. Some areas place you outside and some inside, but the majority of the game takes place rotating around tubes. This gameplay only differs slightly in boss levels, that allow you to rotate around a central point with no forward motion. You can obtain different power-ups including special weapons, health bonuses and extra lives as you play through the game’s 9 levels. Each level is divided into 2 stages, one on tubes and a boss fight afterwards.

The game takes up most of the screen, with much smaller borders than similar games such as Zero Tolerance, a very impressive technical achievement. A two player splitscreen mode is also available. However, the game also suffers from slowdown and some of the texture data of the Mega Drive version looks corrupted but this was fixed with the Mega-CD version.
