DonPachi is a 1995 vertical manic shoot-'em-up originally in arcades and was the first game from the developer Cave. Settings are mainly woodland and enemies are military vehicles and robots, culminating in the final boss, a huge robotic bee. One of three weapon configurations is chosen at start and then leveled up through dropped power-ups. DonPachi was ported to the Sega Saturn and Sony Playstation in 1996.

The past is being altered. An android, known as Next EXY, has traveled one thousand years back in time. Your task is to stop NEXY and the other Elemental Daughters who were built in the image of the Elemental Dolls who once protected humanity. What is NEXY’s intent? Should you attack what you shouldn’t understand? Orders are orders, and Col. Godwin Longhener is not to be ignored. The legendary bullet-hell shoot-’em-up series has come to Steam with DoDonPachi Resurrection from CAVE Co., Ltd., the powerhouse behind revered bullet-hell shooters such as Mushihimesama and Deathsmiles.

Compared to DonPachi, DoDonPachi is generally known for introducing new gameplay elements while improving or changing existing ones. The overall background of the game, unlike following sequels, remains more or less centered around a supposed invasion by a mysterious race of mechanized aliens, which the player is called to face throughout its run. However, more sinister and shocking secrets lie beneath the surface, accessible only to those brave and skilled enough to clear the entire game.

DoDonPachi MAXIMUM is the sixth entry in the DonPachi series of shooting games, the fifth developed by CAVE, and the first designed specifically for mobile phone platforms. In many ways, MAXIMUM is a "celebration" of the history of CAVE's shooting games, re-contextualizing many stages, bosses and mechanics from their past releases (such as DoDonPachi, Ketsui, and Akai Katana) into a more mobile-friendly format. The scoring system in MAXIMUM is massively simplified compared to the previous release (Dai-Fukkatsu), and there is instead a greater focus on completing certain in-stage actions in order to unlock easier or harder paths of stages.

Dodonpachi Unlimited was a short-lived free-to-play mobile shooter. While it adapted characters, art and music loosely from Dodonpachi Sai-Dai-Ou-Jou, its gameplay had little in common with other games in the series. It lacks the core combo and scoring mechanics from the core Dodonpachi series, instead opting for a very basic set of shooting mechanics. Like many of Mobirix's other shooters, the base game is free to play but players are able to play for single-use powerups, and the game is balanced to be difficult to play without using them.
