Compared to DonPachi, DoDonPachi is generally known for introducing new gameplay elements while improving or changing existing ones. The overall background of the game, unlike following sequels, remains more or less centered around a supposed invasion by a mysterious race of mechanized aliens, which the player is called to face throughout its run. However, more sinister and shocking secrets lie beneath the surface, accessible only to those brave and skilled enough to clear the entire game.

Dodonpachi Dai-Ou-Jou: Black Label is a revised version of the original Dodonpachi Dai-Ou-Jou, released only six months after the original version. It features remixed gameplay with a number of refinements. Players are given the option at the start of their game whether to play a one-loop or two-loop game, with the one-loop option always giving players the ability to face off against hidden boss Taisabachi and true final boss Hibachi. The first loop is made noticeably easier, and players are able to keep their lives and bombs when entering the second loop. Several other bugfixes and adjustments to the scoring system lead to an overall smoother difficulty curve. Dodonpachi Unlimited was a short-lived free-to-play mobile shooter. While it adapted characters, art and music loosely from Dodonpachi Sai-Dai-Ou-Jou, its gameplay had little in common with other games in the series. It lacks the core combo and scoring mechanics from the core Dodonpachi series, instead opting for a very basic set of shooting mechanics. Like many of Mobirix's other shooters, the base game is free to play but players are able to play for single-use powerups, and the game is balanced to be difficult to play without using them.

DoDonPachi MAXIMUM is the sixth entry in the DonPachi series of shooting games, the fifth developed by CAVE, and the first designed specifically for mobile phone platforms. In many ways, MAXIMUM is a "celebration" of the history of CAVE's shooting games, re-contextualizing many stages, bosses and mechanics from their past releases (such as DoDonPachi, Ketsui, and Akai Katana) into a more mobile-friendly format. The scoring system in MAXIMUM is massively simplified compared to the previous release (Dai-Fukkatsu), and there is instead a greater focus on completing certain in-stage actions in order to unlock easier or harder paths of stages.
