In Startling Odyssey, the player takes the role of a young boy named Leon. One day, his home villages is attacked by monsters. His best friend is killed, and the most powerful magician of the village is turned into stone and abducted by the monsters' leader. Leon receives the blessing of the village elder and begins his quest to avenge the death of his friend and to defeat the demonic forces that threaten the land. The game is a rather traditional Japanese RPG, with all the familiar ingredients: Leon (and his companions who later join the party) roams the world map, entering towns and dungeons, buying equipment and items, and engaging randomly appearing enemies in turn-based combat. The battles are viewed from first-person perspective. Characters can use regular attacks as well as magical spells, and the battles can be also set on Auto.

Korean RPG developed by Gravity (makers of Ragnarok Online) and Sonnori and later published in Japan by Nihon Falcom. Predecessor to Ragnarok Online with interesting characters and world and combat system similar to Grandia. Arcturus is a Korean-made role-playing game in Japanese style, similar to Grandia II in visual presentation. The player can choose between two prologues chapters (either Elluard's or Sizz's), after which the two stories converge. There is no overworld in the game, and areas are interconnected. Battles take place in the same environment as exploration, and are turn-based. The player can navigate characters on the battle field and also take their speed rankings into account, as executions of attacks and other moves depends on them. Magic can be learned by certain characters and is divided into four elements: Water, Air, Earth, and Fire. Casting spells requires a certain amount of real time when in combat. Characters learn new spells by repeatedly using available ones in the correspondent category. Those who do not have access to magic can execute various special attacks with their own separate point gauges. In addition to HP, characters also have "barrier points", which are reduced first when enemies damage them.

Deep Dungeon IV: Kuro no Youjutsushi is the fourth and final installment in the Deep Dungeon series. Unfortunately this game has removed the custom character feature of the previous game. Through the game, the player will meet up to two additional playable characters with predetermined class. This game also reverts to the standard practice or randomizing characters' stat growth when gaining an experience level. New to this engine is that the player can eventually learn to summon two monsters to function as a temporary additional party member for a single battle. It also removed the feature that stops random battles when the player is significantly more powerful than the enemies. This isn't as bad as it seems as the maps in this game are also much smaller (whereas the previous games used multi-floor dungeons up to 32x32 tiles, the dungeons in this game are either single floor, or multiple floors that can fit within a single 32x32 map) In this game, the player can accept "requests" from the non-player characters. These are optional tasks that will reward the player with bonus items, experience or money when finished.

Nekketsu Oyako is a beat-'em-up by Technosoft released for the PlayStation in 1994 and the Sega Saturn in 1995. Neither version was released outside Japan. The title roughly translates to "Burning-Blood Family." The game is noted for its humorous presentation. For example, one stage takes place inside a whale, and alcoholic beverages (a healing item) can only be consumed by Rando while his two kids get an "adult only" message instead.

The three King's Field PS1 games form a trilogy relating the saga of a mythical country named Verdite. King's Field 1 (released only in Japan) was the first RPG for the Playstation console and King's Field 2 (released as "King's Field" in the US and EU) was the first ever Playstation RPG in the US and Europe. King's Field: Pilot Style is a mini game whose story takes place in the period between King's Field 2 and King's Field 3. Pilot Style was given away as a promotional item at a game show in Japan and went relatively unnoticed. It only takes about an hour to complete, but it is an interesting tidbit in the King's Field world.

MapleStory: Unmei no Shoujo is the first title from the franchise to be released on the 3DS and represents a big step forward for the series. It sees you take control of a young girl who has a mysterious spirit trapped inside her and the only way for her to be rid of it is to head out on an adventure! The game will retain its simplistic look and playing style, with characters drawn up as sprites and everything being controlled by a single button. In keeping with the RPG genre you'll be able to customise your character by selecting her weapon speciality and giving her a specific skill set.
