The Ritual

26.02.2016
Genre: Adventure
Every few years, in the face of poor harvests, pestilence, or mysterious disappearances, the villagers in this remote country must make a sacrifice to restore balance and prevent the destruction of their society. The entity to which they make this offering has been called many things: monster, demon, or beast. The villagers do not know the true name or origins of the beast, nor do they care to. They know enough: if allowed to slake its thirst for the blood of the innocents, it will spare them and perhaps even favor them with a bountiful harvest in the fall. The children to be sacrificed are left deep in the woods, or sometimes on an island nearby. Sometimes they are drugged, sometimes they are bound, sometimes they simply accept their grim fate. An elder of the village draws a symbol in the dirt and chants strange words into the night sky. Once finished, the elder departs quickly, lest the beast devour him or her along with its quarry. The beast hunts the child sacrifices. Sometimes it glides silently through the air, sometimes it sprints along the ground like an animal. No child left to the monster in this way has ever returned to the village. This year, you are among those to be sacrificed. You don't know if this monster can be hurt, let alone killed. You're sure that if you run far enough and fast enough that you can survive the night without being caught and devoured.

Silent Hill: Mobile 3 is the final mobile game in a trilogy that began in Silent Hill: Orphan and takes place in a mansion where the dark secrets of the town finally will be revealed. The gameplay is similar to the previous two games: it's a first person adventure game that consists of a number of static environments that the player can move between and interact with a point and click interface. At some occasions the player will have to fight against different monsters, and when that happens the cursor will be transformed into a crosshair allowing the player to aim and shoot. The shooting system is slightly different from previous games, each enemy has a weak point and when hit at the right time leads to extra damage.

Silent Hill: Mobile 2 is the first sequel to Silent Hill: Orphan. The game features the same first-person, point-and-click gameplay as its prequel. Players are charged with using a clever point’n’click interface to solve a series of puzzles and combating hideous creatures, as a twisting plot gradually unfolds. As the game progresses, two parallel plots gradually entwine, and the player is drawn into a dark, macabre world brought to vivid life by the game’s visuals and eerie music and effects.

The story of Twilight Syndrome: Saikai focuses on four Japanese teenagers: Yuri, her sister Masa, and their friends Atsushi and Aya. It all begins when the youngsters hear rumors about spirits contained in the school building. At night, Yuri and her friends go into the school and play a spirit-summoning game. Suddenly, real ghosts appear and scare the teenagers away. The next day, Yuri is almost ready to believe it was all a dream... but naturally it wasn't. The dark secrets of the lost souls are going to be revealed only to those which possess a special sense - the Twilight Syndrome.. The third entry in the Twilight Syndrome series is also a horror adventure, sharing most gameplay elements with its predecessors. The gameplay here is very minimalistic: the player can navigate the 3D models of the heroes (several characters can be controlled at once, as a group) through the limited areas (also rendered in 3D), searching for clues and escaping from danger. There is no other interaction, no usable items, and no combat. Dialogue and action choices will pop out during many situations. Some of these choices do not influence the narrative, while others might change the following dialogue, and also lead the young heroes to premature death. An additional gameplay mode (beside the story mode) is free-roaming exploration for Yuri, who can explore the school and its surroundings at night and gather more stories from the ghosts she encounters.

Dreaming Mary is an original adventure game in a sidescrolling format, made using the free RPG Maker VX Ace Lite. It is inspired by the Japanese horror game Ib and the abstract game Yume Nikki, and is influenced by the indie platformer Eversion as well as the TV show Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica. Despite these influences, Dreaming Mary is not exactly a horror game. It does contain horror elements, though they might never be encountered by a player who chooses to indulge in the dreams instead of investigating. The game's average playtime ranges from fifteen to twenty-five minutes to reach one ending, and there are four endings. In the game you are able to interact with items and NPCs. It is important to pay attention to dialogue and to your surroundings in order to proceed. Sound is vital in this game and can help the player move forward as well as provide hints to the situation Mary has found herself in.
