SaGa Scarlet Grace is an open world style RPG with turn-based combat. The world map is full of events that will affect the story. There are no dungeons. There are 4 protagonists to choose from and the story will change in a large way based of the character being played. A single playthrough could take from 30-60 hours. Every character you meet in the story can be an ally and you have 6 allies at the start but you can only have a party of 5 people at one time. There are 9 weapon types that can be used by any character.

Romancing SaGa is set in the fictional world of Mardias, which was created by the God Marda. Long ago, war raged between three wicked gods, Death, Saruin, and Schirach, and the lord of all gods, Elore. At the end of that long conflict, Death and Schirach were stripped of their powers, and Saruin was imprisoned through the might of the ten Fatestones and the hero Mirsa's ultimate sacrifice. Based on the model of tank many different kinds of weapons, cannons, and accessories can be equipped to it, making for hundreds of different options. Tanks can even be given a custom paint job that is saved to the memory card.

As in previous Wild Arms games, the dungeons contain many environmental puzzles to solve.
