The Japanese animation "Armored Trooper Votoms", released in 1983, was the brainchild of N.Shioyama (Ronin Warriors) and R. Takahashi (Gasaraki). Together they created one of the most beloved (in Japan) shows in the history of Japanese Animation. The series was later released (1996) in the US by Central Park Media. The series spanned 19 videocassettes, and quickly developed a small, but devoted fan following. Its 80's style animation turned off a lot of would-be fans, but those willing to endure the animation were rewarded with one of the best storylines (and also some really cool mecha designs) available in the genre. The series was so popular in Japan that games, toys, and models are to this day being made. "Armored Trooper Votoms: The Battling Road" is, the first Votoms game created, and is an incredible game. Utilizing the DSP chip (A chip implemented into no more than 15 Super Nintendo/Famicom cartridges) to create a Pseudo-3D environment, this game looks absolutely wonderful for its time. Battletech: Gray Death Legion is an unreleased mech shooter game for the Sega Mega-CD and Sega Saturn set to be published in January 1995 by Absolute Entertainment, and based on FASA's Battletech universe. The game uses a first-person perspective for the action, and is similar to Absolute's RDF: Global Conflict, also on Mega-CD. Nothing is known about the Saturn version other than being mentioned on some magazines of the time, but it's likely it would've played similarly. The game was put on indefinite hold in late 1995 due to the poor state of Absolute's finances. Sometime in the 2000s, a prototype of the Mega-CD version was found, which was later given a commercial unlicensed release by Good Deal Games.

The player leads a four-man team (three AI-controlled teammates) of United States Navy SEALs through 12 missions in four regions: Alaska, Thailand, Congo, and Turkmenistan in the years 2006 and 2007. In the single player missions, commands can be spoken using the included USB headset or via an onscreen menu if the optional SOCOM headset was not purchased. Typical missions consist of killing terrorists, rescuing hostages, retrieving intelligence, or destroying terrorist bases. The player character's codename is Kahuna, while the NPC teammates' codenames are Boomer, Spectre and Jester. The team is divided into two sub-groups, Alpha and Bravo. The Alpha group consists of the player and Boomer, while the remaining two make up Bravo. Commands can be issued to both individuals and a whole group, for example it is possible to ask team Bravo to remain stationary while the player is scouting the area with Boomer. However the player can not venture alone through a map, when Kahuna is too far away from Boomer he will automatically resume following the player, regardless of prior orders. Briefings and intel such as maps and photos are given prior to each mission.
