Alone in the Dark presents itself as a reboot of the classic 1992 survival horror game featuring a noir-setting with horror elements and a moody atmosphere of darkness and shadows carried by terrifying visuals. The game revolves around investigating the environments for clues and solving puzzles to advance in the story, which the player can choose how much the game will help on finding these clues and where to go next. This reboot bears an interestingly similar fashion to the first games' mechanics but massively modernized and improved upon.

Alone in the Dark is a reboot of the original game and the fifth installment of the series. It features a new storyline and characters while still maintaining the core elements of the survival horror genre. The game is set out through DVD-style episodes where the player can choose to start from the beginning or choose to skip to a section if they get stuck. The PS2 and Wii version of Alone in the Dark is a completely different game from the Xbox 360 and PC version. Level structure, mechanics of gameplay and looks of the characters sometimes differ strongly as these versions contain concept elements that were left out of the other game.

F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin is the sequel to F.E.A.R. and continues the series' trademark blend of supernatural horror and suspense.
