Mafia III is an open-world action-adventure game played from a third-person perspective and the third entry in the Mafia series. Players control Lincoln Clay across a large recreation of the fictional city of New Bordeaux, modeled on New Orleans, tackling missions with a mix of gunplay, melee combat, stealth, and a cover system. Objectives can be approached in different ways, and players seize territory from rival criminal outfits and hand districts to their lieutenants. Period cars can be driven across the city, and the setting and licensed soundtrack draw heavily on the late 1960s American South.

Mafia: The Old Country is a third-person action-adventure game set in early 1900s Sicily. It follows Enzo Favara, a former forced laborer who joins the Torrisi crime family in search of a better life and becomes involved in the violent world of organized crime. The game follows a linear narrative structure and combines gunfights, knife combat, stealth, and exploration. Enzo travels across Sicilian towns and countryside on foot, horseback, and in period automobiles while carrying out assignments for the Torrisi family.

Water is the main component in many of the game's puzzles in which Kate uses her kinetic powers, gained in the second half. Other puzzles involve using an universal device to hack security installations (as a mini-game) or find out codes to open doors. Those are written in an invisible font on walls and have to made visible with her tool. The rest of the game consists of climbing sections and shoot outs with terrorists. Here the game uses a traditional cover system and five ammo types.
