Clannad follows the life of Tomoya Okazaki, a high school delinquent who meets many people in his last year at school, including five girls, and helps resolve their individual problems. The gameplay of Clannad follows a branching plot line which offers pre-determined scenarios with courses of interaction, and focuses on the appeal of the five female main characters by the player character. The game was ranked as the best-selling PC game sold in Japan for the time of its release, and charted in the national top 50 several more times afterwards.

Sprung can be regarded as a dating sim, though the linearity and variety in the game (as well as its humor) also lend it to being an adventure game. It is set up in a peaceful world line where okabe can hang out romantically with all the main characters of the original novel: Makise Kurise, Shiina Mayure, Kiryuu Moeka, Feiris, Suzuha Amane and Urushibara Ruka. Okabe ends up in the Delta world line (>3% of divergence) after conducting numerous experiments with the D-mail. When Okabe comes to, he finds the lab members preparing for a party and that due to successive experimenting the Future Gadget Laboratory's electric bill has skyrocketed.
