Rambo: The Video Game puts the player in John Rambo's combat boots, and takes them on an action packed journey through the iconic combat sequences and story-arcs of First blood, Rambo: First Blood Part II & Rambo III.

Rambo III for the arcade is a different game compared to the one released for the SEGA consoles and the computer ports. The arcade version was is a rail shooter game played from the third-person perspective whereby Rambo would have to blast through hordes of enemy soldiers, jets, tanks using various weapons with crosshairs, as well as fight tank bosses at the end of each level.

Rambo III is a shooting game developed and published by Sega for the Sega Master System, making use of the Light Phaser peripheral. It is based upon the film Rambo III. John Rambo, America's favorite soldier, makes a daring rescue attempt on a Russian military base deep in war-torn Afghanistan. Falcon Patrol is a two-way side-scrolling shooter. Players fly a jet across a looping area and must shoot down attacking aircraft. A small radar at the bottom of the screen shows the enemies' position. Fuel and rockets are limited, but there are several landing platforms where the jet can be refueled and resupplied. Before the jet is able to land however, it needs to be brought to a full halt right above the platform, leaving it vulnerable to attacks. Landing platforms can also be destroyed if they are bombed or enemy planes crash into them. As the game progresses, enemies attack in increasingly large and difficult waves.

The player leads a four-man team (three AI-controlled teammates) of United States Navy SEALs through 12 missions in four regions: Alaska, Thailand, Congo, and Turkmenistan in the years 2006 and 2007. In the single player missions, commands can be spoken using the included USB headset or via an onscreen menu if the optional SOCOM headset was not purchased. Typical missions consist of killing terrorists, rescuing hostages, retrieving intelligence, or destroying terrorist bases. The player character's codename is Kahuna, while the NPC teammates' codenames are Boomer, Spectre and Jester. The team is divided into two sub-groups, Alpha and Bravo. The Alpha group consists of the player and Boomer, while the remaining two make up Bravo. Commands can be issued to both individuals and a whole group, for example it is possible to ask team Bravo to remain stationary while the player is scouting the area with Boomer. However the player can not venture alone through a map, when Kahuna is too far away from Boomer he will automatically resume following the player, regardless of prior orders. Briefings and intel such as maps and photos are given prior to each mission.
