In Waterworld, you play from an overhead/isometric perspective controlling the Mariner's boat on the ocean. The point of the game is to destroy the Smokers' boats and dive for sunken artifacts, at which point the game switches to a side on perspective so that the player can directly control the Mariner underwater.

Each mission puts you in the role of commander of either the Imperial army or the Freedom fighters in a campaign to undermine and eventually destroy the opposing force. AI patterns you to simply give a unit the order "Search and Destroy" and it would drive off towards the enemy's last known location, in search for something to kill. There is also "explore" mode which let your units do all the map exploring for you. A mission/campaign editor is also provided.

The game is seen from an isometric view similar to Diablo and Crusader. Game missions range from killing off all the aliens, saving colonists and alot more. Players will have the ability to modify their squads weapons, which range from lasers to missile launchers. The game supports multiplayer up to 4 players on LAN and Internet. It even supports single player co-op.

It might remind people of Missile Command but the action is slower and spread over six screens which represent different areas of the U.S.A. Enemy missiles, planes, and subs will attack and you must direct your own forces, which include missiles, planes, subs, and satellites, to intercept them. Each type of defense has strengths and weaknesses (missiles are fast but limited in range, planes are slower but have unlimited range). Satellites are a better all-around defense but are only available every so often. Some weapons aren't available in certain areas, and some enemies are resistant to certain weapons, so you must alter your strategy accordingly.
