KOF Maximum Impact Regulation "A" is a fighting game developed by SNK Playmore and is an upgrade to KOF: Maximum Impact 2. It was released for the Taito Type-X2 arcade system in July 2008. It is the only arcade release made for the KOF: MI series. It adds the classic 3 on 3 game play from the 2D KOF series with the hopes of winning over the series' fanbase as well as new players. The game was also released for the PlayStation 2 only in Japan on July 26, 2008. The new original character added to the roster is Xiao Lon, Duo Lon's adopted sister and an assassin ninja of the Hizoku clan. She is usually a normal and curious girl. Prone to crying and mercy, she is disliked by most of her clan and her powers alienate her from being truly accepted into society. She reverts to being an assassin once she leaves her home but seems to find displeasure in her profession. Other new additions to the game include Ash Crimson, Blue Mary and Makoto Mizoguchi from Fighter's History series.

The King of Fighters: Maximum Impact 2 was released in North America as The King of Fighters 2006, and is a sequel to The King of Fighters: Maximum Impact. MI2 brings you back to the team fighting universe of the KOF with the added spin of using a polygonal engine. All of the characters from the original MI return, and are joined by 4 newcomers and 14 secret guest stars, totaling a whopping 38 characters, each with a unique story mode and dozens of possible costumes. The story this time deals with the appearance of the evil Jivatma in South Town, where all the heroes converge for their own personal reasons. Gameplay changes include the ability to sidestep and super cancel several moves; additional backgrounds and bonus features can be unlocked after beating the story mode, as well as completing the mission mode and time attack challenges

It is also possible to destroy the opponent's means of attack since they have their own health meters, leaving the opponent unable to do anything except try to ram their opponent off the stage. Arenas have holes and traps to look out for, such as bumpers and tiles that damage you, but there are no items or other abilities available. The story of the game is framed around a tournament hosted by a goddess that offers the winner anything they desire. Each character gets their own ending if you can complete the single player mode with them. A local multiplayer option is also available for two players.
