Kyukyoku Tiger has a swathe of differences to it's overseas counterpart, most notably reverting the player to a previous checkpoint on death rather than respawning them, and being one-player only. There are also more minor changes in factors such as the amount of shots the player can have on screen at once. The game was a success for Toaplan in arcades, reportedly reaching 10 Million worldwide players, and a number of console ports were made in the 90s. A sequel, Kyukyoku Tiger II/Twin Cobra II, followed in 1995, though this was developed by Takumi Corporation following TOAPLAN's bankruptcy in 1994.

Truxton is a 1988 vertically scrolling, shoot 'em up arcade game developed by Toaplan, later ported to the Mega Drive (worldwide) and the PC Engine (Japan-only). Like many other scrolling shooters, the game is set in outer space, where the player takes control of a small spaceship across several planets. The game is played with an eight-way joystick and two buttons (a shot and a bomb button) through five large levels and their bosses (which then loop forever, at higher difficulties).

Azur Lane is a side-scrolling shoot 'em up video game created by Chinese developers Shanghai Manjuu and Xiamen Yongshi, released in 2017 for the iOS and Android operating systems. Set in an alternate timeline of World War II, players engage in side-scrolling shooter gameplay, using female moe anthropomorphic characters based on warships from the war's major participants. Other gameplay elements, like customizing a home and marrying in-game characters, are also present. First launched in China in May and in Japan in September 2017, Azur Lane has become very popular, especially in Japan where the player count reached five million within four months after its release. Players have voted the game among the top five on Google Play's Best Game of 2017 list for the region. Critics have attributed the game's popularity to its original and well-designed gameplay system.
