Dynasty Warriors 4 was developed by Omega Force and is based on a series of books called Romance of the Three Kingdoms, written by Luo Guanzhong. As the series has progressed, it has strayed further from the actual plot of Romance of the Three Kingdoms but instead has given the user more input on how the storyline progresses. Originally released on the PS2 in March 2003, it was later ported to the Xbox in September of the same year and, in 2005, ported to the PC under the name Dynasty Warriors 4 Hyper.

Dynasty Warriors 3 is the third installment of the Dynasty Warriors series in North America and the second within the Shin Sangoku Musou series in Japan. Samurai Warriors 3 is a hack and slash game and the third main entry in the Samurai Warriors series, set during Japan's Sengoku period. Players control historical warriors who cut through large numbers of enemy soldiers on the battlefield, using each character's unique weapons and powerful special attacks. A Spirit Gauge lets players cancel attacks into stronger moves, and characters can be created and customized in a dedicated Dojo section. The game includes Story, Free, and Historical modes, and the Wii version adds a mode based on Nintendo's The Mysterious Murasame Castle featuring the character Takamaru.

Samurai Warriors is the first title in the series of hack and slash video games created by Koei's Omega Force team based loosely around the Sengoku ("Warring States") period of Japanese history and it is a sister series of the Dynasty Warriors series. In the basic gameplay of Samurai Warriors, the player takes the role of a single officer in battle and must fend off hordes of enemy soldiers and defeat the enemy commander. The player has at their disposal a range of combo attacks and crowd-clearing special moves known as Musou attacks. The variety of attacks available increase as the character levels up and acquires more superior weapons. The game features a total of 15 characters based on historical figures during the Warring States period of Japan.
