Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games is a sports game with the official license of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games and a crossover franchise from the Mario and the Sonic universe similar to Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. It takes place at the Vancouver Winter Olympics of 2010. Like the previous game, the 27 events are presented as motion-based mini-games. Aside from the main events there are a series of Dream Events that have enhanced features and visuals. Some of the events can optionally be played using the balance board peripheral. Events include for instance skiing, snowboarding, bobsleigh, ice hockey, figure skating and more. The games can be played individually or in a festival mode that spans 17 days.

The game includes a number of events, including returning ones from previous Mario & Sonic titles, such as boxing, soccer, swimming, and gymnastics, and new ones, such as karate, skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing. It will also feature a mode with 2D Events where players can compete in classic 2D versions of events from the 1964 Summer Olympics. Based off older sports games, these events are played using button controls only and will only feature eight playable characters. These 2D Events' animations reflect the 8-bit Mario and 16-bit Sonic game art style.

Unlike previous games, this game was officially licensed by the International Olympic Committee for the 31st Summer Olympic Games and taking place in the host city Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The game contains two new game modes, Golf and Rugby along with twenty new characters, ten from the Mario series, ten from the Sonic the Hedgehog series.

As the title implies, the game is centered around the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, taking place in Sochi, Russia. Different events uses the Wii Remote Plus controller, Wii U GamePad, or both. As the other games in the series, it features realistic events with ones in Mario's and Sonic's worlds. As the game is a Wii U exclusive, Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games is the first in the series to not have a handheld version.
